What Fee-Free TAFE is
The Queensland Government says Fee-Free TAFE lets eligible Queenslanders study priority skill sets and qualifications, and that it has been extended until 31 December 2026. It is only available through TAFE Queensland and CQUniversity. TAFE Queensland describes it as an initiative of the Australian and Queensland Governments.
Tuition is free, but you might still pay for things like uniforms and resources. Student numbers may be capped for some courses, and some need you to hold a qualification first. If you start before the end date, you keep fee-free access until you finish, as long as you do not withdraw or stop.
Who is eligible
The Queensland Government page lists these conditions:
- You live permanently in Queensland.
- You are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident on the pathway to permanent residency with an eligible visa subclass.
- You are 15 or older and no longer at school.
- You are not currently enrolled in a qualification, apart from foundation skills.
- You have not already completed a Fee-Free TAFE or Free Nursing qualification.
Your job status and how many qualifications you already hold do not affect eligibility. You can only complete one qualification under Fee-Free TAFE or Free Nursing. TAFE Queensland says First Nations Australians, people aged 17 to 24 and people with disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
Courses on the list that suit resources work
The official list is the Queensland Skills Gateway Fee Free TAFE search. When we checked it on 13 October 2026 it showed 77 courses. None was a mining qualification, and we found no civil construction, plant operation, driving, forklift, first aid or electrical courses on it. These are the listed courses closest to resources work:
| Code | Course | Area of work |
|---|---|---|
| MSL30122 | Certificate III in Laboratory Skills | Laboratory testing and sampling. |
| AHC31424 | Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management | Environmental and land rehabilitation work. |
| 11455NAT | Certificate II in Autonomous Technologies | Automated and remotely operated equipment. |
| MSA30208 | Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology | Workshop and fabrication skills. |
| AHC30921 | Certificate III in Landscape Construction | Outdoor construction and site works. |
| AURSS00064 | Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing Skill Set | Needs an existing automotive trade qualification. |
The Queensland page also says fee-free construction training is available for students who start before 31 December, but it does not name the courses, so check the Skills Gateway for current construction listings.
Career Start: the other funded option
If the course you want is not fee-free, Career Start may help. It funds certificate III qualifications in priority and emerging industries, plus apprenticeship and traineeship training, lower-level qualifications that industry treats as job entry points, and foundation skills such as language, literacy and numeracy. It is not free: the government pays part of the cost to the provider and you pay the rest as a co-contribution fee.
- You can get up to 2 funded training places, such as a certificate III and an apprenticeship or traineeship.
- You must be 15 or older, out of school, living permanently in Queensland and an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident or on an eligible visa.
- You are not eligible on the general pathway if you have finished a certificate III or higher in the last 10 years. Qualifications done at school, through Skilling Queenslanders for Work or in foundation skills do not count.
- Apprentices and trainees must be employed with a training contract registered with the department.
Our mining courses guide covers which mining qualifications exist and how they differ from the short tickets most entry level jobs ask for.
Free construction apprenticeships for over 25s
Free Construction Apprenticeships for Over 25s is a separate program for people who start an eligible apprenticeship between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2027. The trades it covers include electrician, plumber, carpenter, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic and electronic instrument tradesperson. Electrical and instrument trades are also used on mine sites, so this can be a route in for career changers. See our mining apprenticeships guide for how mining employers hire apprentices.
Other Queensland programs
- Skilling Queenslanders for Work. This program helps eligible Queenslanders gain skills, qualifications and experience. Community organisations, councils, industry bodies and training providers deliver it, and you join through one of those organisations. It is not mining specific.
- Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy. A schools program, not adult training. A July 2025 ministerial statement announced $2 million for regional hubs, starting in Mackay, with Rockhampton to follow in 2026 and Townsville in 2027.
How to check and apply
- Search the Skills Gateway Fee Free TAFE list for the course you want.
- Check the eligibility list above against your own situation.
- Contact TAFE Queensland or CQUniversity, the only two providers, and ask about places, start dates and any costs beyond tuition.
- If your course is not on the list, ask the provider whether Career Start funding applies.
Many entry level mining jobs ask for short tickets rather than a full qualification. The how to get into mining guide sets out which ones.
