What Fee-free TAFE NSW is
TAFE NSW describes Fee-free TAFE as a joint initiative of the Australian and NSW Governments offering tuition-free training. Places are limited and subject to availability. For Semester 2, 2026, enrolments are open for full-qualification courses starting between 1 July and 31 December 2026, and TAFE NSW says more fee-free courses may be added during the semester.
Tuition is free, but you may still pay for uniforms, equipment, materials, textbooks or licensing requirements. We could not confirm from official pages what happens to the program after 2026, so check the TAFE NSW page before planning beyond the current semester.
Who is eligible
TAFE NSW says you generally must meet these at the time of enrolment:
- Live or work in New South Wales.
- Be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, permanent Australian resident or eligible humanitarian visa holder.
- Be 15 or older and no longer enrolled at school.
- Meet any extra requirements for the course.
You can apply for more than one course, but only one fee-free place per semester is approved. TAFE NSW says priority is often given to groups facing barriers to education and employment, including First Nations people, veterans, jobseekers, young people, unpaid carers, women entering non-traditional industries and people with disability.
Fee-free courses that suit resources work
There is no mining qualification on the fee-free list that we could find. The TAFE NSW Extraction course page under Mining and Resources showed no courses currently available. These fee-free labelled courses are closest to work mines hire for. We read them on the civil construction, engineering and electrotechnology pages, where TAFE NSW tags each as either Fee-free limited or Fee-free available:
| Code | Course | Area of work |
|---|---|---|
| RII30820 | Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations | Excavators, dozers and graders on civil and mine sites. |
| RII30920 | Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance, or General) | Civil and haul road work. |
| RII40820 | Certificate IV in Civil Construction Design | Civil design and supervision roles. |
| MEM20422 | Certificate II in Engineering Pathways | Entry to engineering trades. |
| MEM30219 | Certificate III in Engineering, Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining) | Fitter and machinist trade. |
| MEM40422 | Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting | Technical drawing for engineering. |
| UEE30820 | Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician | Electrician trade. |
| UEE22020 | Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) | Entry to electrical trades. |
| CPP30221 | Certificate III in Surveying and Spatial Information Services | Mine surveying support. |
The tags and course lists are a live snapshot. Places are limited, and individual campuses and intakes vary, so check the current list and the course page before you plan. The Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations is the closest match to mine site machine work. Our mining courses guide covers how plant qualifications differ from the short tickets entry level jobs ask for.
Mining courses and Smart and Skilled
Mining qualifications are still subsidised in NSW, just not usually free. Smart and Skilled is the NSW Government program that subsidises eligible training on the NSW Skills List, so eligible students may study for free or at a reduced cost. To qualify you must live or work in NSW (or meet the Aboriginal border exception), be 15 or older, not be in secondary school, be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen or hold an eligible humanitarian visa, and have a valid Unique Student Identifier. Fully subsidised places go to some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, people with disability, eligible humanitarian visa holders and registered apprentices and trainees. Concession fees apply to certificates I to IV for people on eligible Commonwealth benefits.
The Skills NSW mining page names courses that may be part of getting into the industry: Certificate II in Drilling Operations, Certificate II in Underground Coal Mining, Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations and the Diploma of Spatial Information Services. It does not state fees or providers, but its course finder shows an estimated fee for each listing, and some listings carry a NSW Fee Free tag. When we searched, the Certificate II in Surface Extraction Operations and Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation showed an estimated fee range starting at $0 and no fee-free tag. Treat that as a prompt to ask the provider, not a promise of a free place. Also see the TAFE NSW Mining and Resources area for what it currently offers.
Fee-free apprenticeships and traineeships
If you can get an employer, apprenticeships may cost nothing in tuition. The NSW Department of Education says apprenticeships funded under Smart and Skilled are fee-free, with no upfront training cost for students or employers. A separate fee-free traineeships initiative covers traineeships, and TAFE NSW has its own fee-free traineeships page. The start dates these rules apply from differ between the pages we read, so check the current page for your start date.
Fitting, electrical, boilermaking and plant mechanic trades are all used on mine sites. See our mining apprenticeships guide for how mining employers hire apprentices, and mining jobs in NSW or the Hunter Valley guide for where the work is.
How to check and enrol
- Find the course on the TAFE NSW site and choose your preferred study location.
- Select Calculate my fee and answer the eligibility questions. TAFE NSW says the calculator shows whether you may be eligible and whether the course is in the program.
- Choose Start enrolment if the course has no entry requirements, or Start application and submit your documents if it does.
- TAFE NSW then assesses your fee-free eligibility. If you are successful, your tuition fees are updated to $0. Places are not held during assessment, so apply early.
- If you do not get a fee-free place, you can continue and pay the course fees, pick another course or withdraw.
Tickets come from registered training providers, and each site runs its own induction. If you are still working out your mix of courses, use the Mine Ready Plan or read how to get into mining.
Frequently asked questions
Is there fee-free TAFE for mining in NSW?
Not for a mining qualification, as far as we could find. When we checked on 13 October 2026, the TAFE NSW Mining and Resources Extraction page showed no courses currently available. Fee-free places do exist in related courses that mines hire for, including Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations, engineering and electrotechnology.
Who is eligible for Fee-free TAFE NSW?
TAFE NSW says you generally must live or work in NSW, be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or eligible humanitarian visa holder, be 15 or older, no longer be at school, and meet any extra course requirements. Eligibility is checked at enrolment.
How many Fee-free TAFE NSW courses can I do?
One place per semester. TAFE NSW says you can apply for more than one course, but only one fee-free place per semester can be approved, and places are limited and not held while your eligibility is assessed.
What is the difference between Fee-free TAFE and Smart and Skilled?
Smart and Skilled is the NSW Government subsidy for courses on the NSW Skills List, and your fee depends on your circumstances. Fee-free TAFE NSW is a joint Commonwealth and NSW initiative with its own limited places. A course can be subsidised under Smart and Skilled without being fee-free.
Are apprenticeships free in NSW?
The NSW Department of Education says apprenticeships funded under Smart and Skilled are fee-free, with no student fee. The dates the rule applies from differ between the NSW and TAFE NSW pages, so check the current page for your start date.
Do I still pay anything on a fee-free course?
Possibly. TAFE NSW says you may still pay course-related costs such as uniforms, equipment, materials, textbooks or licensing requirements.
