Mines Mineral Resources Tasmania lists

Mineral Resources Tasmania describes Rosebery, Savage River and the Renison Joint Venture as the three large operating mines, and lists the others below. Mineral Resources Tasmania also lists proposed projects, including Avebury (nickel, Zeehan) and Mount Lindsay. It gives no workforce count for any mine, so we give none for those we have not sourced.

Savage River magnetite is converted to iron ore pellets at Port Latta. Mineral Resources Tasmania says mineral extraction and processing is Tasmania’s largest export industry, at more than 50% of mercantile exports.

Rosebery: the one mine with a sourced workforce

MMG’s Rosebery page says the mine has operated since 1936, is underground, and has more than 700 permanent employees and contractors. It says annual zinc production is 45,000 to 55,000 tonnes, and concentrate goes by rail to the Port of Burnie.

Census counts by region

The 2021 Census counts employed people by where they live and what industry they work in. Mining here means ABS industry B.

Area (place of residence)Employed in miningAll employed
Tasmania2,653254,722
West Coast (SA3)5347,713
West Coast (Tas.) (SA2)3491,588
Burnie - Ulverstone (SA3)80821,358

We have no source for how many of these people work at which mine, and the ABS counts where people live, so workers based elsewhere are not included. For how rosters work, see our FIFO guide or the FIFO jobs page.

Who are the major mining employers in Tasmania?

These companies state, on their own websites, that they operate in Tasmania. We checked each site on 10 October 2026. It is a starting list from our company directory, not a ranking and not a list of who is hiring. Renison is listed by Mineral Resources Tasmania, but we have not verified any company in our directory for it, so it is not in the table.

Our company data holds head office locations only, so we do not list a site for BHP, Glencore, Newmont (head offices: BHP, Melbourne; Glencore, Baar; Newmont, Denver). We have not verified their Tasmanian operations for this guide. A head office is not a mine site.

What do you need to work in a Tasmanian mine?

  • Safety management system. WorkSafe Tasmania says a mine holder must appoint a mine operator and a site senior officer, and the operator must develop a health and safety management system and identify principal mining hazards with specific management plans. It lists noise, airborne contaminants and fatigue from shift work as common hazards.
  • Mining regulations. The 2025 supplementary regulations commenced on 30 June 2025 and support the Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Act 2012. WorkSafe Tasmania says regulation 45 rescinds them on 30 June 2027 and a replacement set is expected after consultation, so check the current rules.
  • Induction. We found no mining-specific induction requirement on those pages. The operator runs the induction, so ask what it requires before you pay for any course. Standard 11 is a Queensland coal standard, not a Tasmanian one.
  • Tickets and licences. Browse the tickets and certificates directory and read how to get into mining for the usual first steps. WorkSafe Tasmania lists underground machinery operators, shotfirers, trades and truck drivers among mining occupations.
