High risk work licence class WP

EWP licence and Yellow Card: which one do you need?

Two different things get called an EWP ticket. A WP high risk work licence is required for boom-type platforms with a boom of 11 metres or more (TLILIC0005). The EWPA Yellow Card is an industry card, not a licence. Booms under 11 metres and scissor lifts need no licence, though your site may ask for training.

What are the rules for EWP?

  • TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more) is the national unit behind the WP licence course. The unit states that competence in it does not in itself result in a high risk work licence.

EWP questions answered

Is an EWP ticket a licence?

Not always. The WP class is a high risk work licence issued by your state or territory regulator. The EWPA Yellow Card is an industry training credential, not a licence. Check which one your employer or site is asking for before you book.

Do I need a licence for a scissor lift or a boom under 11 metres?

Not a high risk work licence. WorkSafe Queensland says platforms under 11 metres are outside the WP class, and EWPA says scissor lifts and shorter booms do not need that licence. Your site or employer may still require training, so ask them.

How much does an EWP course cost?

We checked 14 courses on 10 October 2026. WP licence courses with a public price list at $500 to $1,330. Some providers show no public price. Several exclude the regulator's licence application fee. Under 11 m courses are cheaper, and their prices are in the provider notes.

How do I get the WP licence?

Complete a TLILIC0005 course with a registered training organisation. An accredited assessor then assesses you. Competence in the unit does not on its own give you a licence, so you apply to your state regulator. In Queensland, apply within 60 days of the assessment.

How long does an EWP licence or Yellow Card last?

A WP licence is valid for 5 years in NSW, QLD, VIC and WA. A Yellow Card is valid for 5 years from the training date, according to EWPA. For other states and territories, check with the regulator.

Do I need a Yellow Card as well as the WP licence?

EWPA says the legal duty comes from WHS law, not from holding the card, and that a boom of 11 metres or more needs the WP licence in addition to training. Whether your site also wants a Yellow Card is set by the site or employer. Ask before you pay for both.
